5 Creative Tablet Apps to Kick Off Fall

For some, the tablet is a perfect way to watch a movie — whether it's on the bus ride back to college or before bed while the roommate studies. For others, it's a space-saving way to have a library of cookbooks on the counter while preparing a meal, or the go-to lightweight choice for cracking a new bestseller between stations on the train.

But when you're equipped with the powerful visuals and long battery life — not to mention the blazing-fast performance — of an Intel-powered tablet in hand, why stop there?

Your tablet is a creative tool as well, and some of the most exciting apps available right now will let you work wonders with your photos, movies, even the look and feel of your home.

As a new season arrives, we round up some of the most innovative Android apps we've found in recent months. So, download our shortlist of five and get into some fresh new functionality this fall.

As those creative juices start flowing, get excited for Duality, an upcoming collaboration between Intel and Mashable – there’s more information at the end of the article.

  • Autodesk Homestyler: Kids off to college? Whether you've a newly empty nest or simply the notion to redecorate, this fall might be the perfect time to change a room or two around the house. Autodesk's app helps take the guesswork out of what new furniture, lighting, rugs, paintings, and mirrors will look like — just about anything you can bring to your living space can be checked on the tablet screen. It's easy to use: first, you snap a shot of your room and add it into the app's 3D modeler. Then, you begin to place items in that model from the app's extensive inventory of options. If you need a bit of inspiration, Homestyler also provides an interactive Design Stream full of ideas. (Free, Google Chrome Store)

  • PhotoDirector: Sharing photos is one thing, but what happens when your new dorm buddy photobombs your favorite shot? (Free, Google Play)

  • groopic: Sometimes the problem isn't that you've one too many persons in a picture, it's that you end up holding the tablet and you're not in the shot! For those days when you want to catch a memorable moment but also have your face among the crowd, there's groopic. Here's how it works: Take a picture of the group. Have someone else in the gathering take a second picture with you in it, and then the app combines the two images into one. History will never know the difference. (Free, Google Play)
